The Greatest of These

Published February 16, 2014

We all want faith, hope, and love. The Bible supports each of these important aspects of the human reality, but the evangelist says that “love” is the greatest of the three. I guess that we can recognize this truth, since “God so loved the world…,” and since Jesus “gave us a new commandment…to love.” But, putting it into practice is challenging. Why? Because too few love us back. I suppose there are other reasons too; personal reasons, like we’ve been hurt. Yet, when all’s said and done, it’s mostly uncomfortable to love others. Is God Trying to Tell Us Something?

Published September 1, 2013

Maybe it’s just my imagination, but I sense that churchgoing people are getting less out of the Bible and church than in the past. It seems that most are influenced far more by what’s happening around them, especially as it impacts their lives, then they are influenced by God’s revelation to us. We’ve fostered good relations with Saudi Arabia for decades, and we’ve literally given them every consideration, including billions of dollars in aid. We know that they were all Muslims, and that their mantra was “kill the infidels” …us Americans. These things are irritating enough without adding in a conspiracy theory. […]

Waiting for the Other Shoe to Drop

Published February 27, 2010

I’ve found myself living in a daily state of anxiety. Every time I listen to the news or log on to one of the several “business news” sites that I frequent, it’s more of the same. Things are not good. Washington is selling us down the river. The economy will bust for sure this next time, and we’d better get ready for civil war. You can see why I’m anxious. But, you know, Jesus taught us, “For this reason I say to you, do not be anxious for your life,as to what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; […]
