Where’s the “power” in the Christian life?   It’s in the Holy Spirit.  So, how do you get the Spirit?  Well, the Holy Spirit comes to indwell the believer at the time of his new birth (Rom.8.9; 1 Cor. 12.13; Ephes. 1.13).  Jesus told us that we need to be “born again”(John 3.3).  It’s a spiritual birth, and we receive a spiritual presence (an indwelling) at that time. Some will say, “Yes, I did that, but I don’t feel like I have any power.”  Okay.  Why not? The Bible is very clear that we need to be filled with the Holy […]

Why Church?

Published October 13, 2013

Jesus said, “…upon this rock I build My church (and the “rock” is Christ, not Peter); and the gates of Hades (Hell) shall not overpower it” (Matt.16-18). That sounds powerful to me. Yet, as we look at the American church we get the feeling that it’s pretty anemic. There are some reasons for this: 1) the American church has been institutionalized and crystallized, hardened if you will; 2) the American church has become a business where pastors are trained as CEOs, successful managers; 3) the American church has lost its prophetic voice against sin and wrongdoing, i.e. we “go long […]

Being Filled with the Holy Spirit

Published May 19, 2013

This is Pentecost Sunday, falling 50 (penta) days after Easter, and it’s when the Christian church was born. We read in Acts, chapter two, that “(on) the day of Pentecost…they were all together in one place…and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit…” This is no small event but, unfortunately, it has been shaped by opinion and interpretation into something quite different from what it was. Jesus told the disciples that they were to wait in Jerusalem until “power came upon them” (acts 1.8). It was the same promise that He gave them in John 14, where He said, “And […]

The Terrible – Awful Interim

Published April 27, 2012

So, Easter is over, and Jesus Christ has risen from the dead, and He has appeared to the disciples, and now they’re all waiting. It is the terrible-awful interim period between His glorious resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit. This time period is upon us in many ways, not just in the 50 days of waiting for the Pentecostal promise. We’re all living in some kind of “waiting period.” Too often it is a negative time, like waiting for “the next shoe to drop.” It’s extremely uncomfortable. We don’t like it, and we’d just as soon get it […]

Power is an issue. It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about using energy in our homes or cars, or if we’re talking about spiritual matters of faith, perseverance and behavior , we need power. Sadly, most of us feel powerless. Why? Because we seemingly have no control over our lives. Each day is another stumbling gamble. This should not be the case for Christ revering believers. First of all, we have the power of salvation. The Bible says, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes…” (Rom. […]
