Surprises and Faith
Published October 21, 2012I don’t know about you, but I don’t like surprises. I like things to go along in a normal manner without too much stir-up. Others I know like surprises, but what they’re thinking about are “good surprises,” like getting a raise or finding a $100 bill in your winter ski pants. So, I suppose surprises can be both good and bad. Sadly, my experience has taught me that more often than not, surprises are bad. Like our brother Mike Greer getting the word out of the blue that he had a brain tumor. That kind of surprise we can do [...]

Published October 7, 2012Abbott and Costello, if you remember them, do a comic routine called “Who’s On First?” It’s about baseball, and through the routine they try to get a handle on the players’ names. So, “Who” is on first base, and “What” is on second base…and so on. The result is a hilarious confusion. This reminds me of our political scene right now…who’s on first? That is, who’s ahead in the polls? It’s really kind of amusing to watch the news media debate the value of the polls and which poll is the most accurate, and what the polling means in the [...]

Published August 26, 2012We’ve been talking a lot about personal evangelism and being God’s witness in the church lately. Many people are uncomfortable with the idea of going door-to-door and handing out tracts or standing up in the midst of a group of strangers and declaring their faith in Jesus Christ. There are other types of witnessing. An easy way to show others your faith is via your lifestyle. When you take Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you are reborn, promising a life going forward that honors and pleases God. Are you continuing to live that way? If so, others will witness [...]

Published October 15, 2011We often forget that God favors us as His children. The Bible is overflowing with verses that affirm His good will and many benefits to those who love Him. So it is that Jesus said, “Ask and it shall be done for you” (John 14.14; 15.7). Again, Jesus said, “How much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him” (Luke 11.13). Likewise, the Psalmist writes: “God leads me…He restores my soul…He guides me…He delivers me..He is my refuge and my strength…He sustains me…He is my rock and salvation…” (Ps.23; 34; 46; 55; 62). Let’s [...]

Published April 13, 2010When the Bible talks about “walking” it is talking about behavior. That is, “to walk” is to move ahead in the behavior that pleases God. Well, Christian walking is suffering from a growing condition of moral arthritis. Our “spiritual movements,” so to speak, are being seriously hampered by a debilitating infirmity. It’s mostly cultural, where our American society has moved away from the Judeo-Christian ethic to a pagan ethic of hedonism. But, it is also quite personal, and is expressed in the statement: “I don’t want to.” Well, I’m not going to spend time bemoaning the fact of our moral [...]

Published February 27, 2010I’ve found myself living in a daily state of anxiety. Every time I listen to the news or log on to one of the several “business news” sites that I frequent, it’s more of the same. Things are not good. Washington is selling us down the river. The economy will bust for sure this next time, and we’d better get ready for civil war. You can see why I’m anxious. But, you know, Jesus taught us, “For this reason I say to you, do not be anxious for your life,as to what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; [...]
