Independence   Americans are pretty independent. It’s both a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing because our great nation has been built on the “independent and stalwart efforts of persons” dedicated to free enterprise and innovation. It’s been a curse because our independent attitudes negatively impact group efforts and cooperation for a common good.   Nearly all helping organizations, like Salvation Army, are hurting for volunteers. This is also reflected in community organizations like the Lion’s Club and Kiwanis. Members in these organizations are graying and passing away while younger members are not to be found.   The church […]

Church Security…… Unfortunately, we live in a time when the issue of security is all over us. We think immediately of terrorist attacks. These ugly acts of war used to be away from us, somewhere around the other side of the world. Today they are here in our midst with crazy, radicalized assassins shooting innocent people in public places. Churches are not exempt, as we have already experienced in our nation. So, there’s a growing effort to get churches trained in security. Several churches on our mountain already have security teams. It’s simple: be prepared. The Bible says that “While […]

..Dad’s Day           Being a Dad is an honor without equal. I suppose some can’t say that, having had sad or bad experiences, but my “dad’s life” has been great! I praise God for this, and I thank Him daily for my four, adult children and families, and their wonderful mother.        I firmly believe that it’s God’s divine intention that we dads do well in having children and raising them. That’s the norm, but as with everything else, the devil gets in the way to confuse things. Yet, we are overcomers in Christ. “I can […]

Anxiety Jesus teaches us “do not be anxious” (Matt.6.25,34). He knew how we humans worry, often needlessly, over things. In His time on earth people were most anxious about getting enough to eat, clothes to wear, and the other necessities of life. It has been an ongoing struggle for our race since Adam. Even after Jesus paid the price for our sins, rose from the dead, and sent out His disciples into the world, the malady of anxiety continues to haunt us. Why?   It all comes down to faith, and Jesus taught a lot about faith. He taught, “Because […]

Memorial Day

Published May 27, 2016

REMEMBERING THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED OUR COUNTRY AND THOSE WHO HAVE GONE ON BEFORE US. “Memorial Day” It used to be called “Decoration Day” because we went out and decorated the graves of those departed with flowers. This started with Civil War veterans in 1868 when they felt the need to remember their fallen comrades with grave flowers. Both the Union and Confederate veterans practiced this, so, as time passed the “decoration days” were merged together in one celebration day. Finally, after WWII it became known as “Memorial Day,” but it was not until Congress passed the Uniformed Monday […]

Teachings We have to learn everything. There’s no “God-given” instinct for sound biblical doctrine. There’s no way to just hold your Bible and hope that its revelation will soak into you through osmosis. Neither will a believer in Jesus Christ know the Savior better aside from the hard work of worship, prayer and Bible study. But, you have to want it. That’s the same with any worthwhile effort: you have to want to do it. So it is that we pursue our interests with far more intentionality and devotion than we pursue Jesus. Whereas, we know that “an education” is […]
