The Future

Published November 4, 2016

The Future       We worry about the future, and what’s going to happen to us. Jesus told us flat out to “not be anxious” (Matt.6.25). He taught us that God’s got it all under control. Paul also echoed our Lord’s teaching, saying, “Be anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Phil.4.6).       You may question this teaching, especially if you have some heavy problems. Yet, for the believer, the life of faith is not a matter of assurance; it’s a matter of trust. […]

Being Positive

Published October 21, 2016

Being Positive.        After being treated to weeks of “negative news,” it’s pretty hard to be positive, yet, the Bible tells us to “rejoice, be thankful and praise God.” The Lord knows that even in the midst of problems, we still have the victory in Him. “In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world” (John 16.33).        John writes that “the victory is our faith” (1 Jn.5.4).        So, why is it so hard to stay positive? Our faith is always going to be challenged: 1) Life teaches […]

Doubting Thomas

Published October 7, 2016

Doubting Thomas Thomas said, after Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection, “Unless I shall see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe” (John 20.25b). Thomas is us. We want assurance in our belief. There’s nothing wrong about wanting proof of the things we’re asked to believe. The problem is that “doubting” short-circuits our faith and leaves us vulnerable to the world’s deceptions. Jesus waned us about “doubting.” He said, “Stop doubting and believe” (NIV John 20.27b). Why? Because “belief,” […]

Influenced

Published September 30, 2016

Influenced.       You may think that you’ve got control of your life, and I’m praying that you do, but more than likely you’re being influenced daily by the “powers and principalities” that Paul writes about in Ephesians.        “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Ephes.6.12). If this doesn’t scare you, then it should. Evil is afoot seeking to overcome us and rule over us.         But it’s […]

Being Overcomers

Published September 15, 2016

Being Overcomers.       You’ve heard that we’re “overcomers in Christ.” Jesus told us that He’s “overcome the world,” and John writes that our faith is “the victory that has overcome the world” (John 16.33; 1 Jn.5.4). Yet, we too often look like “undercomers.” Why is that?        It goes back to our faith. If you have faith in God, and if you trust Him, pray to Him and believe His Word, then you have positioned yourself for victory (Prov. 3.5,6). So, the evangelist writes: “…We exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance, and […]

The 9-11 Look

Published September 9, 2016

The 9-11 Look        Today is 9-11, and it happens to be Sunday. It’s providential in a way that this tragic anniversary should fall on the Lord’s Day. It was 15 years ago today that 3,000 Americans were killed and another 6,000 injured in New York City in a terror attack on the Twin Towers. Questions remain, and the true story may never be known, but the reality is that many Americans died needlessly.       Such acts of terror are the devil’s way of keeping us stirred-up. Evil knows that as long as we’re hating and fighting each […]

Driven        What drives you to keep going in life? Unfortunately, today, in our culture most of what seems to drive us is raw fear, anxiety and anger. We are bombarded with a constant media hype of bad news, scary news, and news that’s filled with the devil’s agenda.         You see, Jesus told us that the the devil is “a murderer, a thief and a liar” (John 8.44; 10.10a). Can you see him at work in our world right now? So,why give him opportunity? The Bible says, “Resist the devil and he will flee […]

Our Hope

Published August 19, 2016

Our Hope “Our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.” So, we sing this in the old hymn The Solid Rock. Unfortunately, as true as this is, most people want more in their hope that’s tangible to them. This is the reason that Jesus said at the end of His parable about the Widow and the Unrighteous Judge, “When the Son of Man comes will He find faith on the earth” (Luke 18.8)? Too many hope in what they can see, touch and take to the bank. This means that God’s love and God’s saving act […]

“How Christian?”

Published August 5, 2016

“How Christian?”       I experienced the “they aren’t Christians” statement from a leader in another local church this week, as he justified not cooperating with the “religious” community on this mountain.       Now, I can appreciate where he was coming from. Being “Christian” assumes several key doctrines and beliefs, not the least of which is Jesus as the resurrected Lord, Son of God, our Savior. Nevertheless, Jesus was inclusive; He was not exclusive, and I’m afraid that there are some “believers” among us that feel separation is more pleasing to God than cooperation. After all, doesn’t Paul […]

Courage

Published July 21, 2016

“Courage”  It was 118 degrees out side and much much hotter in her home. In desperation, a woman called the maintenance management center, because the air conditioning problem had turned her home into a furnace with furniture. Not knowing what else to do or say, in a panic, she asked how she was to care for her baby and toddler. The answering service hurriedly gave her the scripted text book answer, “Just move into a hotel and bill the landlord.” She angrily huffed and hung up on the them…         Knowing the rehearsed “text book” answer completely […]
