My Neighbor

My Neighbor
“And who is my neighbor?” asked the lawyer of Jesus (Luke 10.29-37).
The lawyer didn’t really care, but he was trying “to justify himself,” after Jesus had put him in his place.
I guess we do the same thing when faced with this question. Jesus’ definition of one’s neighbor as being “someone in need, lying in the ditch,” is too demanding for us. We’d much rather relate to “neighbors” who are like us. We’d rather relate to people who are neat, clean, happy and self-supporting. It’s just less messy that way.
This is what the Jew understood as his neighbor. We read in Leviticus, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself…” (Lev.19.18). Just one problem: this only applied to your “Jewish” neighbor. As for the Samaritans among them, the rule was ignored. Jesus took this rule and made it inclusive of all those around us in need. It’s something to think about…isn’t it?
