We remember. We remember the good and the bad, and too often our memories are filled with the unresolved debris of life. Maybe this is also true of our memories of people departed. How do we remember them?

For the most part, I guess we remember the good things about those departed, but the good is also surrounded by natural disagreements and criticisms. No one has a perfect score, and that’s the reason we need to seek reconciliation. The Bible says, “Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ, and gave us the ministry of reconciliation” (2 Cor.5.18).

As we remember those who have gone before us, we need to deal with any lingering negative feelings. First, we do this because Jesus taught us to forgive (Matt.6.14,15). And, secondly, because it’s good therapy for us. That’s what putting flowers on graves is all about: it reinforces our love and appreciation of that one departed. This enhances our lives.

Remember them then. Treasure your relationships in the now, and prosper in those past, and may the love of God cover the debts.
