What Church?

Jesus is the head of the churchNo question seems to bother believers more these days in America than, “What church should I go to?” Or, more worrisome: “Should I go to church at all?”

These questions primarily arise because of a growing dissatisfaction in our life situations. We see this in current divorce statistics, job opportunities and working conditions, consumer preferences, and of course, church attendance.

Gone are the days of happy stability, consistent perseverance, and dedication for the long haul. Nowadays we have a “restaurant mentality,” where we shop around for everything from the right cell phone to a new mate on the internet, just like we go from one restaurant to another, finally getting tired of the food in one place just to go find another.

I honestly feel compassion for those wandering believers who can’t seem to find the satisfaction they want in the church. I share in Jesus’ concern, Who looked at the crowd and saw them as “distressed and downcast like sheep without a shepherd” (Matt. 9.36).

I love the local church, and not just our New Hope Church, but all the churches in Christ. They all have something to offer believers but they aren’t restaurants, neither are they organizations, nor businesses. They are living organisms that reflect the lives of their individual members. To reject the body life of the church, or to never make a commitment to it, means perpetual dissatisfaction.

What church should you go to? The one God put you in.
