The Greatest of These

Jesus is LoveWe all want faith, hope, and love. The Bible supports each of these important aspects of the human reality, but the evangelist says that “love” is the greatest of the three.

I guess that we can recognize this truth, since “God so loved the world…,” and since Jesus “gave us a new commandment…to love.” But, putting it into practice is challenging. Why? Because too few love us back. I suppose there are other reasons too; personal reasons, like we’ve been hurt. Yet, when all’s said and done, it’s mostly uncomfortable to love others.

Biblical love, not romantic love, like the kind we celebrate at Valentine’s Day, is self-giving. “It does not demand its own way” (1 Cor. 13.5). It’s the kind of love that we see Jesus giving all the way to the Cross. It’s what Jesus said from the Cross that puts it in perspective: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23.34).

We need faith to believe in Jesus and get saved, and we need hope to continue to live in this world, but it’s love that makes the difference for our character, our morality, and our humanity. Without the love of Jesus “down in my heart” I am nothing.

Jesus put it in perspective when He told the rich young ruler, “No one is good except God alone” (Luke 18.19). Really? What does that say about us? And, what does it say about love?

We are closest to being good and closest to being like God when we love one another. “God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him” (1 Jn.4.16).
