What Really Matters?

solar-powerNew Year’s resolutions. They’re about as effective in bringing about new behavior as one determining to get out of debt. Sure. Getting out of debt is a good idea, and I’m sure that many people make good resolutions, but speaking it and doing it are separated by a wide chasm of entropy. We just run out of energy.

Jesus taught us to not make vows but rather to make our “Yes,” yes and our “No,” no (Matt.5.37). He further states that anything more than this is of the devil. Why? Because the devil teaches us to trust ourselves, not God. As my mother used to say, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.”

How true. We want to do the right thing, and we want to be better, but when it comes down to doing so…well, we’re weak, weak, weak. Does this matter to God? Of course it does, and that’s the reason that He came personally to pay the price for our “weaknesses.”

What really matters? I guess most of us finally figure it out; “Be authentic in Christ.” Shakespeare notes, “To thine own self be true.” What does this mean? It means that we stop kidding ourselves into thinking that we can make it on our own. It means that we recognize that without help from God, we’re lost.

All the New Year’s resolutions in the world cannot compare to moments of humility in the Lord, where we become authentic and plead, “Please help me; I can’t do it on my own.”
