The Advent Season

jesus-is-the-reason-for-the-seasonWe are entering the Christmas season once again. “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift” (2 Cor.9.15)!

Yet again we are faced with the ultimate question: “Is Jesus the Son of God, the Savior of the world?” It seems that the devil and his demons are forever warring against this truth. God is being locked out of every aspect of our American culture, and not because the majority of us want it so. He’s being marginalized by the vocal minority, who continue in unbelief.

Recently, Costco, the retail giant, came under fire by a preacher for selling the Bible with a sticker that labeled it fiction. Strange, since the Bible is universally accepted as history. In fact, Bill O’Reilly’s book, Killing Jesus, is an admitted “historical account” of the real Jesus, who lived at the opening of the first century. This should not surprise us because if Jesus really did live (which He did), and if He really did die at Calvary (which He did), and if He really did rise from the dead (to which more than 500 witnesses testified), then we’d better pay attention.

Yet, the very message of Christmas is the very message that we don’t want to hear as sinners. If Jesus is real, then I’m faced with a need to be saved from the power and penalty of my sin. That’s offensive to the naysayers of our day. If I’m not so bad, then Jesus is not so necessary, and the good news of Christmas becomes the bad news of my denied need.

Let’s believe daily in Jesus and be merry this Christmas about the fact that because of God’s great love for us He came personally to pay the price for our sins.
