Caring for Those in Need

Praying-Hands-PostersThe week of “Prayer and Fasting” for the community of Show Low ends today. There’s been a good response, and we are hopeful that the monies raised will meet the needs of those asking for help over the winter.

What needs? Everyone has basic needs of food, clothing and shelter. Then too, there are other essential things, like power, heating and water, each of which requires money. And beyond these, there are needs for transportation, fuel, insurance, and living supplies. We who have good jobs (or a retirement income) and are maintaining ourselves may take all of this for granted.

But what about those who are unemployed, or, who are part of the growing body of the “working poor”? These are people who make the minimum wage, or who are not given 40 hours of work per week. Yes, they’re working, but they are not making a go of it. Unfortunately, the American middle class is shrinking as more and more families are being hammered by the rising costs of just staying even with the current cultural demands. The cold, hard fact of the matter is that if you aren’t making at least $30,000 a year and you have a family, rent, a vehicle and insurance, you’ll get behind in a hurry.

How should we believers handle all this? Well, at the start, we must understand that Jesus taught us to “share what we have” (Matt. 25.34-40). That means two things: 1) We learn to live on less; and 2) we “put on a heart of compassion” for those in need around us (Col. 3.12). Such is the Christian obligation that “…whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him” (1 Jn.3.17). It is our Christian duty to help others – and particularly so during the holidays, when the need is often greatest.
