Why Church?

Jesus is the head of the churchJesus said, “…upon this rock I build My church (and the “rock” is Christ, not Peter); and the gates of Hades (Hell) shall not overpower it” (Matt.16-18). That sounds powerful to me. Yet, as we look at the American church we get the feeling that it’s pretty anemic. There are some reasons for this: 1) the American church has been institutionalized and crystallized, hardened if you will; 2) the American church has become a business where pastors are trained as CEOs, successful managers; 3) the American church has lost its prophetic voice against sin and wrongdoing, i.e. we “go long to get along.”  No wonder our nation is in such a state of confusion.

Today’s church is more of a club where you pay your dues, and benefit from the services offered (baby dedications, baptisms, marriage, funerals and religious entertainment). Some would put counseling in there too, but most of the so-called “Christian counseling” is nothing more than secular counseling with a Christian label. True Christian counseling comes from the Bible, and its objective is not to put Band-Aids on hurts, but rather, to cure the cancer of sin.

What did Jesus have in mind? Well, He first saw the church as His body (Col.1.18). He is the rightful head of that body. The direction for the life and action of the church must come from the head, not from the respective parts. And, although all the parts are needed and are necessary, it’s the head that calls the shots (1 Cor.12.27). Jesus also saw His church as His bride, who would be prepared in truth and holiness (Col. 1.18; Rev.19.7). The church is the place where “the righteous acts of the saints” are displayed, and where they are taught, that the congregations may be built up to go forth into the world, winning the lost.

Jesus did not compromise. We like to think that compromising is a worthwhile enterprise, especially in interpersonal relationships and politics. So, we have bent over backwards to make every sinner and every transgressor comfortable in the church. However, although Jesus permitted the “tares” to exist among the wheat, He never taught that the wheat should change to accommodate the tares.

Jesus’ church has power because it is energized by His Holy Spirit, and that means that His body will not capitulate to the world.
