God’s Government

Jesus creator of the worldGod’s government never shuts down. It’s good to remember this with all the hullabaloo now over our government’s epic failure to persevere and continue. It’s just one more reason for people of faith to remember that man’s way and man’s means are always subject to failure, but God’s kingdom and His righteousness shall not pass away.

Jesus said, after warning us to not be anxious, “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you” (Matt. 6.33).

I know, it may seem at times in the crunch of the moment that we’re goners. Our fears rise up, and too often we’re more than willing to accept man’s “quick fix” without praying through our need and waiting before the Lord. Yet, history shows us that a people who depend on God shall not be cast down. It shows us that when we believe and trust in Him that “all things work together for good” (Rom.828).

Here’s the issue: believers are citizens of two kingdoms. Be careful not to give too much attention to your national kingdom. Paul puts it this way, “For our citizenship is in heaven from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Phil.3.20). Jesus is our king, not the guy heading our national government. Believers listen to and follow the King of kings. We’re not much interested in what goes on in Congress or the White House. We’re much more interested in what Jesus has to say.

At this point you’re probably saying, “Yeah, but we need to fight back.” Mark Twain, the American author and humorist, supposedly once said, when asked about how crucial the presidency is, “Well, I dare say, if we didn’t have a president for four years, we’d scarcely notice the difference.”

God’s government was ordained to manifest His will and His plan for mankind. And, in that context, God wants us to be alive in Him. That means His kingdom wishes and desires become our wishes and desires. The human political environment does not lend itself to that, rather, it wants to remake things in its own image. Let it. the Bible shows us that no matter what king is in power, they all pass away but the Word of God lasts forever.

We are safe and secure in God’s government, and we can afford to trust in Him, even when an earthly king is causing us grief.
