Is God Trying to Tell Us Something?

The Holy BibleMaybe it’s just my imagination, but I sense that churchgoing people are getting less out of the Bible and church than in the past.

It seems that most are influenced far more by what’s happening around them, especially as it impacts their lives, then they are influenced by God’s revelation to us. If that’s the case, then the Scripture is proven out “At that time many will fall away and will betray one another and hate one another…because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold” (Matt.24.10,12).

We are in a day of lawlessness, where the guy in the street feels that if he doesn’t take the law into his own hands, then he’ll be used and abused. Therefore, question everything, and ignore authority.

What are we to do…what am I to do? The easy route is to do nothing, and in fact, follow Dr. Timothy Leary’s dictum from the 60′s to “Turn on, tune in and drop out.” Which means do drugs, get stoned and disappear. Yes, that probably doesn’t apply to church people, yet, aren’t the signs of our growing disinterest in God and His revelation right before us? Aren’t we, in a sense, dropping out?

Jesus taught a whole different way of life then what we’re learning in this day and age. If, indeed, Jesus is who He said He is – God’s Son – and if, indeed, He is speaking the truth to us as affirmed by the whole of the Bible, then we’re faced with a monumental dilemma: my way or God’s way.

Does it have to be that radical? Do we finally have to choose the path? Why can’t we still dabble in our fears, anxieties and follow our own, best self-interest? Well, you can, but the truth (Jesus Christ and Him crucified) does not lend itself to vain speculation, nor to dropping out.

God has done the work of showing us the many-layered truth in His Word. Our obligation is to read it, hear it preached and taught, and then take it to heart. We need to stop paying attention to the world and start paying attention to Him. After all, He has something to say.
