Seeing the Forest for the Trees

the forest for the treesIn today’s American culture, we’re being trained, it seems, to overlook the good and instead dwell on the negatives. That’s not to say that we should have a Pollyanna attitude about things, where everything is peachy-keen, rather we should be realistic and willing to do our part to overcome the negatives.

However, the tendency to be either/or – either positive and hopeful, or negative and despondent – is all too prevalent. Balance is lost. It’s like the “George Carlin” definition of an optimist: “An optimist is someone who doesn’t have all the facts.” Which is to say, if we had all the facts then we’d be much more pessimistic…oh dear.

Jesus had all the facts. After all, He was God incarnate, yet, Jesus was one of most optimistic people who ever lived. His optimism was founded squarely on God the Father. Because He “believed the Father,” and because He “depended upon the Father” for all things, He could afford to be optimistic, even in the darkest days (Mk.11.22; John 5.30; Luke 22.42).

It’s really mind opening to hear our Lord speak about the real, present and ongoing care of God for us. Jesus said, “Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they” (Matt. 6.26)?

Yes, we are worth more, and if this wonderful, blue planet, teaming with life, says anything to us it should be, “God cares for you” (1 Pt.5.7). Be optimistic…the “real facts” prove the case.
