Can You Believe?

Jesus creator of the worldCan you believe that the sun will rise this day and set again in evening? Can you believe that our planet will hold its obit around the sun, and spin at a constant rate, and that the seasons will follow one another just as they have in the past? Can you believe that gravity will still work, and we won’t go flying off into space? Can you believe that your heart will continue to beat 80,000 times a day, which is the norm, and you’ll continue to live? “Yes,” you say, “it’s easy to believe that stuff.” But it gets harder. Can you believe that you’ll have enough food to eat and water to drink tomorrow, or, that you’ll have enough money to pay your bills? And harder yet, can you believe that people love you, especially your mate…or God?

Believing is easier with the big stuff. It gets harder with the smaller stuff that directly impacts you, and it gets nearly impossible with personal calamities like ill health, accidents and loss. That’s when we throw ourselves at verses like “…God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose” (Rom.8.28). Do we really believe that?

Jesus said, “Believe in God, believe also in Me…” (John 14.1). In fact, Jesus showed us by teaching and example that the life of faith is the only life. “…The Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head” (Luke 9.58). Jesus taught us to be faithful, to not be anxious, and to lose the idea that we have control over our destinies (Matt.6.25-34).

James writes, “…you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and also do this or that’” (James 4.13-17).

Believing means that at some point we say, “Okay. I give up. You take over, Lord, because I’m not able to make ‘such-and-such’ happen.” It’s just like gravity: you don’t have to believe in it because it’s just there. But, boy would you miss it if it wasn’t. So, our faith flows naturally from the big things to the small things. Why? Because God has proven Himself faithful throughout.
