Why the Bible?

The Bible is precious to believers. It is our only rule for faith and practice, and wisdom dictates that we know what it teaches from cover to cover. But, the mood of the contemporary church has strayed from the Bible. Excuses range from “I don’t have enough time to read it.” all the way to “It’s an archaic book that has little meaning for me in the 21st century.”

Anything and everything that we know about the Christian faith is directly dependent on the Bible. No Bible; no Christian faith. And, if our faith is depreciated, then our life is put into great jeopardy.

Recently, we attended a mega church in Phoenix. There were 2,000 people at the 10:30 a.m. service. I took note of several things: 1) Few if any were carrying Bibles…some had iPads with the Bible on it, like the lady in front of us; 2) The worship space was devoid of Christian symbolism – not even a cross; and 3) No prayer was offered up during the service. I could comment on other things that didn’t fit the “faith of our fathers” in that church, but these three things will suffice.

So, what are the attendees interested in? Why does a church like this have four services, all kinds of contemporary programs, and offerings to support a multi-million dollar budget? I believe it’s for the simple reason that biblical authority has been removed. “Everybody’s welcome and everybody has liberty to do as they please.” Oh, and the church had a coffee shop/cafe. Hmm?

“In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes” (Judges 17.5; 18.1; 21.25). When there’s no authority over the lives of people, things tend to run amok. The Bible is not only God’s Word, and His truth, it is the linch pin that holds our culture together.

We wonder why things seem to be falling apart in our country right now. Some have astutely noted that we’ve marginalized God and ignored His statutes. But even more so, we have sidelined the Bible and its clear teachings about human faith, life and morality. We’ve substituted theatre worship services with a cafe in the commons.

As the American church tries to redefine itself and become more relevant, think about what the Bible says. If you don’t know, read it to find out.
