Living the Christian Promise

I write this before Friday, the winter solstice, December 21, 2012, when the world in the writings and minds of some is supposed to end. If you’re reading this today, you will know that we past that date without calamity. PTL! Now, we can look forward to Christmas on Tuesday.

We need to refocus, and be in focus, as we should have been all along, in the glorious light of God’s coming in Christ. The promise which has been celebrated through all our lives in Christmas is good news. All other so-called “revelations,” especially those lifted up by men, are bad news and are designed to control and oppress us. Jesus came that we might “have life and that abundantly” (John 10.10). Jesus encourages us to “be not anxious,” and to “fear not” (Matt. 6.25; Luke 12.7).

Our Lord knew that the world is a scary place. He knew that the trials and temptations of this life would rob our joy, unless we cling to Him. This is the reason that John the Apostle wrote to the New Testament church.” The world is passing away, and also its lusts, but the one who does the will of God abides forever” (1 Jn. 2.17).

“And what is the will of God?” one may ask. We find the answer in John 6.40: “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him, may have eternal life; and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.” So simple, and yet so hard for us poor, struggling people.

Jesus gives us the Christmas promise, not men speculating about the days and the events of the days. Jesus shows us by His virgin birth, and by His life of service, and by His miracles, and by His very resurrection that we can depend on Him. “My life I give, henceforth to live, O Christ, for Thee alone” (Chrisholm/Lowden, “Living For Jesus”).
