Advent 2012

Today is the first Sunday in Advent. Many Christian churches celebrate this time across the next four weeks as we get ready for Christmas. We light one candle each Sunday to remember the four centuries of waiting for the Savior’s coming (advent). The candles have other meanings too. This week’s candle means hope while the Jesus candle is lit on Christmas eve.

It’s a yearly celebration of the “good news,” and the Lord knows that we need some good news today. That’s what the angel said to the shepherds out keeping their sheep in the fields, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy…for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2.10,11).

Why is the birth of the Savior such good news? Because Jesus Christ is the answer to man’s worst problem: sin. Sin is at the core of every human conflict from interpersonal to war, and causes individuals much pain and grief. Jesus “takes away the sin of the world” (John 1.29). Jesus saves!

But look! Something is happening to this wonderful news. It’s being maligned and depreciated by secular interests. The celebration of our Savior’s birth at Christmas is under fire. Even Christians are aiding the enemy by criticizing December 25th as paganized and culturalized. I say, “So what?” Everyone agrees that Jesus was born, but when is questioned. Can’t we celebrate a day, any day, to commemorate that fact?

Likewise, this year the good news is all the more important. December 21st, just four days before Christmas, is the winter solstice and the end point of the Mayan calendar. Much is being made of this, with many believing it means the end of the world.

Let’s look past December 21st and beyond the murmurings of men in this troubled day to the 25th. Let’s look through it all to the babe born in a manger…the hope of the world.
