Half Empty or Half Full?

Most of us are familiar with a common illustration of attitude where an individual is asked how he sees a drinking glass with water in it. “How much water is in the glass?” Some will say that it is “half full,” while others might say that it is “half empty.” Your answer is indicative of your personal mental attitude about the current state of affairs.

Although there are probably other answers to the question of how much water is in the drinking glass, the point is well taken that each of us has an attitude about the way things are. We are either optimists or we are pessimists, or a combination of the two, depending on the kind of day that we are having.

The Bible leans towards optimism. So, Paul can write to the Philippians (from prison), “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice” (Phil. 4.4)! Or, Paul and Silas were “praying and singing hymns of praise to God…” in the Philippian jail (Acts 16.25). Why? Because they had the blessed assurance of God’s love and His salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord.

In this context, we are “good news Christians,” we’re not “bad news Christians,” and we need to get straight on what God has done for us before we let what man has done to us overpower our attitudes.

Is the glass half full, or is it half empty? You’ll need to decide in your own heart. Remember: God’s love is greater than our sorrow, and His blessings are greater than our trials. All we have to do is believe Him and be thankful.
