Surprises and Faith

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like surprises. I like things to go along in a normal manner without too much stir-up. Others I know like surprises, but what they’re thinking about are “good surprises,” like getting a raise or finding a $100 bill in your winter ski pants.

So, I suppose surprises can be both good and bad. Sadly, my experience has taught me that more often than not, surprises are bad. Like our brother Mike Greer getting the word out of the blue that he had a brain tumor. That kind of surprise we can do without.

Yet, there’s a glorious moment here that lifts up faith as nothing else can. As Mike told me from his bed in the Show Low ER that they had imaged a tumor on his brain and that they were going to send him to Barrows Neurological Institute in the valley for surgery, I was stunned. But, Mike was calm and said, “It’ll be okay. I trust God.”

That’s the way we’ve been praying. First, for God to remove the tumor without surgery, and then, if not, to give the docs skill and wisdom in removing it. Then we got the next surprise. The tumor was very large, and the surgeon was planning on a 10 hour surgery. Oh wow…it was awful.

So, Mike and I prayed together that if God gave the surgeon the job of taking it out, that it would just “pop out of there” in a short surgical time. Well, it took them just three hours to remove the tumor with a minimum amount of hassle. Thank you Lord.

The trade-off between surprises and faith is a never ending battle. Whether the surprise is big or small, awful or a blessing, the believer’s attitude must yield to faith and not the surprise.

This is what Jesus said, “In the world you have tribulation, but take courage, I have overcome the world” (John 16.33).
