Father’s Day

On Sunday June 17th we honor our fathers. It’s practiced in the same spirit as we honor our mothers at another time of the year. Why? Because the family and family life is the foundation of human culture. And, more than that fathers in particular are the God-called, responsible leaders of our families. The great heartache of our day is that fathers have dropped the ball.

Our men’s ministry has been reading and discussing Dr. Cole’s book Maximized Manhood. In the book Dr. Cole leads Christian men to pick up their rightful responsibilities as husbands and fathers. He reminds us repeatedly that: “Manhood and Christ-likeness are synonymous.” They are the same. Jesus Christ is the perfect example of what God intended man to be. Therein is the problem for American males.

If you stand back and look at it, American males don’t want to be like Jesus. They want to be like John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and Bruce Willis. We’re into ourselves, and we are spending less and less quality time with our wives and children. Work is used as an excuse, and so is our increasingly secular life-style. The “Bud-lite” mentality has taken over our sanctified common sense, and we are running away from our families. Consequently, there is a growing number of one parent homes where the children have no male influence, or, they have the “boyfriend” influence which is worthless.

Men! Get a grip!

As goes the family, so goes the culture, and when we wonder about our American society failing, all we have to do is look at our fathers.

The solution is the same as it always has been: get saved, get sanctified, and get under the authority of God’s Word. This happens by no other means than getting tough with yourself. If you want to be a carpenter, or a plumber, or an electrician, engineer, doctor, lawyer, computer guru, or whatever. You have to get educated, be an apprentice, put in the time and sacrifice.

If you want to be a Christian husband and father, you’ll need to do the same.
