The Cycle of Easter

Today is Palm Sunday, and next week we’ll celebrate Easter. In one sense, it’s a yearly event. In another sense, it’s a profound cycle that lays out the plan of God. In this one week period we see: 1) Jesus entering Jerusalem to the praise and adoration of men; 2) a week of living and teaching in the temple; 3) conflict with the world and judgment; 4) death and burial, and 5) resurrection to new life.

In summary it’s the gospel: Jesus Christ crucified dead, buried, and raised again to life as a firm testimony to His truth. But, in the broader sense, it’s the story of life on planet earth. It’s a great drama. In Shakespeare’s words, “Life is a tale told by an idiot; full of sound and fury signifying nothing.” So much for meaninglessness. Yet, in the Easter “drama” we see laid out the glorious will of God to take man and bring him through a troubled life, through conflict and death, to a marvelous redemption and resurrection.

Easter is in all respects the negation of worldly pessimism . In this one week life cycle between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday Jesus shows us in a mini-series what it means to be victorious and complete. Each part of the story applies to us. Each part of the story gives us a handle on the things that oppress us and a handle on the things that liberate us. We would do well to search these things out and understand them.

Jesus said to the questioning Jewish leadership that week: “And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites…”(Matt. 23.12,13). Yes, they were religious hypocrites because they missed God and lifted themselves up . The cycle of Easter teaches us something quite different.
