Why Does God Give Us Trials?

It seems that lately misfortune is befalling many of our family members, friends and acquaintances. People are getting sick, and not with ordinary, treatable illnesses. Many are losing strength, faith and self-control. There are some who have had to endure what seems like, at first glance, more than they could ever be expected to handle. The question on many people’s minds is how God could allow these bad things to happen.

Did God every promise us a rose garden? Certainly not. Since the beginning of time, people’s lives have been full of both ease and trials, peace and angst, successes and failures. The truth is that sometimes unpleasant things happen. “And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it” (Cor. 10:13). This is what the Bible says and, as God’s word, we know it’s true.

There is a reason behind every single little thing that God is in control of, whether good or bad. It is up to use to choose how we view each event. What we may initially think is something bad often turns out to be good, if only in some small way. As humans, we often only see the door that has closed, rather than paying attention to the one just down the hallway that opened. God put us all on this earth for a reason but we don’t know the big picture. We don’t how a trial we face fits into the bigger scheme of things. Remember to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

It’s difficult to find peace and understanding when we are in the midst of a trial – but not it’s not impossible, particularly if we trust in the Lord. Just as Paul endured many trials, not the least of which was being imprisoned for years, yet continued to preach about Jesus so must we look past our own pain and suffering to do God’s work. “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope” (Jer. 28:11).
