Merry Christmas

These are wonderful words! They carry with them all the color, the sounds, the smells, the anticipation and joy of the season. But these words are falling into disfavor. It seems, if I understand the argument correctly, that such a salutation may offend someone who’s not a Christian. The Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, and practicing pagans in our society must be protected. Apparently the tail wags the dog, so to speak.

Now we must say “Happy Holidays!” in order to be politically correct, as if this neutral proclamation will somehow heal the offense of Christ and Christmas. It’s just one more piece of our culture being surrendered to the godless and pagan world around us. What does it mean? Where are we headed? The American Evangelical Church has noted since Hal Lindsey’s book, The Late Great Planet Earth, came out in 1970 that we’re headed for judgment.

At Christmas it’s well to remember John 3.16, 17 and 18. These verses go together, but we usually forget 17 and 18. So, John 3.16 is the good news of God’s love and His saving grace, and verse 17 affirms that there’s no judgment for those in Christ, but verse 18 is clear: “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

You see when we say “Merry Christmas” we are affirming what the Word of God says. We are preaching, if you would, to the world, “There is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved” (Acts 4.12).

It is “the Christ Mass” that takes away the sin of the world. And what is that? It is Christ Jesus “the anointed One of God,” who, by His sacrifice on Calvary’s tree (the Mass), brings us salvation. It is His body sacrificed for us, and His blood shed for our sins, that make us right before God. Do we really want to deny this glorious fact by saying “Happy Holidays,” rather than “Merry Christmas?”

Remember, Jesus Christ has always been an offense (stumbling block) to the world.
