Restaurant Christianity

Do you have a favorite restaurant? I know that when Margaret and I visit our children in Phoenix we often go to a local restaurant for a meal together. There are a lot of choices. In fact, in the one mall that they live near we can choose from Olive Garden, Outback Steak House, Red Lobster, Chili’s, Luby’s, etc. It’s an eater’s paradise. Well, it’s the same with churches. We’ve got 38 choices up here in the White Mountains of Arizona between Show Low, Pinetop-Lakeside and Snowflake-Taylor, and Christians seem to make church choices the same way they make restaurant choices: What’s my favorite food, and where can I get it?

Some want good preaching, others want a lively and quality worship music, others want a good fellowship where they feel accepted, and still others just want a convenient place to stop by, like those mall restaurants. In fact, more and more now Christians are going to several different churches to appease their hunger.

Hey, it didn’t used to be that way. Christian people had an endearing loyalty to their church. No, they didn’t get everything they wanted, but they got enough to be accommodating to the rest. Now, it’s all about customer satisfaction. Hmm? You know, I was born into the Brown family. I’ve been faithful to that family. What if I had put into practice the idea that my family didn’t supply all my needs, so, I went and lived with other families? Does that make any sense at all? Well, yes it does when you consider that the American family is falling apart. Why? Because the divorce rate is high, dad’s not in the home, authority has waned, and discipline is out the window.

You see, what we’ve got here is a crisis. We can fix it, but it depends on you getting straight with God and His biblical model for the church. “Let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another…” (Heb. 10.25). Put the “u” back back in “ch-rch.”
