The Church Today

In the last year I’ve read several contemporary books on the church. They have not been doctrinal, nor for that matter, definitive. No. Each one has said that the American church is in trouble, and if it doesn’t “get a grip” it will go extinct. “How so?” you may ask. Well, for one thing,  Americans don’t see the local church as essential anymore. That means that going to church is only one of many preferences, kind of like electing to eat out or to go on a Saturday picnic.

Part of the reason for this disinterest in the church is that people don’t really believe in a hell to be lost to or a heaven to be gained anymore. In fact, recent polls of “Evangelical Christians” have found an alarming percentage believe that there’s more than one way to heaven. They have discounted Acts 4.12: “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved.” That name is Jesus. Consequently, why go to church? Why be troubled by some preacher telling me what I need to do, if it doesn’t matter anyway?

The question, of course, is “Does it matter?” Is church essential?

My answer is “Yes,” but you’d expect that of me, a Christian pastor. Yet, there’s good reason behind it, but in order for you to believe it, you will need to submit to three truths: 1) The God of the Bible is real and to be feared; 2) The Bible is the Word of God and to be followed, and 3) Without God’s salvation in Jesus Christ, I’m lost. These are the bedrock of our faith. The reason that the American church is failing is that one or more of these principles are being rejected.

The church is not a place to go. The church is not a social club. The church is not a religious institution, but rather, it is the body of Jesus Christ. Jesus founded His church on the “rock” of His Person (Matt. 16.18). The Holy Spirit was given to the church at Pentecost, and the church is the place where He saves lives, delivers people from evil, works miracles, and raises up disciples. It’s very important. It’s the devil’s ploy to make it non-essential in the minds of God’s people.

“Not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more, as you see the day drawing near” (Heb. 10.25).
