The Resurrection

We believe in the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ. That seems simple and straightforward enough but in this day of doubting, cynicism and questioning, the resurrection faces opposition. Why? Well, dead men don’t rise. It’s a matter of human experience. There are also a growing number of Christians who have seen the dead rise, particularly on the mission field. Fact or fake? Ask the witnesses.

Then there’s the heavy consequences of such a thing. If Jesus did arise from the dead, we are obligated to respond. The resurrection validates all He taught and stood for. Add to this the fact that Jesus fulfilled all O.T. “Messianic” prophecies, and you have an even stronger case for belief. But it comes hard to a stubborn and proud people. To admit that Jesus is the Christ means I’m going to have to make up my mind. If I still deny Him, then I’m proving myself to be a fool. There’s a worse state, however, than being a fool about the resurrection; it’s saying you believe in it and live your life as if you don’t.

Jesus said, ” I came that they might have life and have it abundantly” (John 10.10). His resurrection affirms that. We participate in the power of His resurrection and the power of His life when we believe and act on that fact. Jesus told us that “in the world you have tribulation, but rejoice (take courage) for I have overcome the world” (John 16.33). He triumphed over temptation, sin, disobedience and finally death itself! Jesus is our life.

The stunning fact is that in the N.T. Jesus rises from the dead on the third day, and that He was seen by over 500 people. This event caused 12 disciples to go forth and tell the world. It caused them to say, “My Lord and my God” (John 20.28).

So, will it be another cultural resurrection celebration or will this be a day to remember? Will this Easter be the day when you believe and experience the power of Jesus?
