Happy New Year 2011

The salutation “Happy New Year!” is much needed this time around. After last year with its out-of-the-ordinary troubles, we’d all like to experience something more normal, predictable and pleasant this time. Will that happen? I honestly don’t know, but I do know from experience that bad things will happen. Our prayer should be to handle these things in faith. Good or bad, faith is the victory (1 Jn. 5.4).

It is well worth remembering how God has blessed us in the past as we press on into an uncertain future. I mean everything from water to drink, and food to eat, to a job and place to live, to those moments of joy tucked into the wall of our personal tribulation. Yes, our heart of gratitude will carry us through many a bad moment.

In this context, I preached “Maranatha!” to our people last week. The best that we can imagine, and the very best of our faith, is Jesus coming again. When we’re with the Lord all things will be good. Praise His name! “Oh Lord, come!”
We are “fixing our eyes on Jesus” (Heb. 12.2) That should be our New Year’s resolution. No matter what happens, we are determined to see the Lord, and to follow Him, and to believe Him for all that is good, and right, and true. For in Him we “live and move and have our being” (Acts 17.28).

Let us everyone turn to Him and believe Him when He says, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you” (Heb. 13.5). In this promise we have a new year’s hope that no matter what happens, Jesus is still our Lord and Savior. Jesus is still “the Victor,” and He is still the way into life abundant.
