Tiger Woods: A Double Standard?

I despise double standards. Yet, that’s exactly what we’ve got now in America. A new, deadly and twisted double standard, where the church is criticized for being judgmental while the same critics rip apart their own, is being legitimized.

Case in point: Tiger Woods. Yes, he’s sinned. He’s sinned against his wife and children; he’s sinned against his profession and himself, and he’s sinned against God. But his critics, who I would confidently say reject the church for being judgmental, have no problem condemning Tiger.

Well, you may say, “He did awful things.” Really? By what standard are you judging him? If it’s a moral standard, where did it come from? That’s the real issue. As soon as you say that adultery and fornication are wrong, you have given the biblical standard. That’s what the church has preached for 20 centuries.

The Bible says, “Thou shalt not commit adultery” (Ex. 20.14). And again, “For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is that you abstain from sexual immorality” (1 Thess. 4.3).

So, it’s okay for the social critics to condemn Tiger by the biblical standard, but it’s not okay for the church to apply the same standard without being called judgmental.

What we need to remember is that the church preaches against sin as a redemptive measure. Tiger Woods’ critics condemn him with little or no thought of redemption. They feel bigger and better when they can whittle down a celebrity.

It’s an ugly double standard.

It’s time to give back the church’s rightful role as the redemptive, moral guardian of our culture, without accusing us of being “judgmental,” and it’s time to put the secular personality critics to rest.

“He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her (him)” (John 8.7).
